The Other Side of Silence: A Bernie Gunther Novel, Philip Kerr (2016)

25893956The 11th in the Kerr’s Bernie Gunther series, finds our increasingly Forest Gumpishness hero in mid 1950s laying low from the Stasi and the Americans  as a hotel clerk (“The Night Manager”) on the French Riviera.  Hotel work not new to the former Berlin murder detective who tried hiding out as house dick at The Adlon   from  service calls to assist big time Nazis like Heydrich and Goebbels employ his fearless and sardonic style of snooping out the “bad guys” to serve their own devilish plots.  In this one he is recruited by the more charming, but ultimately self serving, Somerset Maugham—the novelist who is blackmailed — in a tangled plot (of course!) that included the highest of high ranking post war spy scandals that rocked the MI-5, MI-6.. the Cambridge Spy Ring of  Burgess-Maclean-Philby deceptions and defections to Moscow. Did I mention Forest Gump? Well of course I did..and what do you know Tom Hanks is said to be working with HBO to bring Gunther to the screen.
